Hello,
The Queens of Thorns can cancel trigerred effect. I found somwhere that trigerred effect is every effect with :, but I think that its every effect which can be activated by a player. Lets show you example (our real situation).
There was military plot revelaed which gives you 2 locations if you win military chalange.
If my opponents wins challenge can I cancel this part of the plot which mention about searching deck for location?

Second problem barracks vs Queen. Discardin barracj is a cost, but can I wait until opp will choose card which will be put into play and then cancle that effect or should I immediately cancel searching?

Thanks in advance for giving some light to those subjects...

I actually find it really sad that I'm blinded to their talent by excessive media hype and the "spoiled-little-rich-kid" antics of their team, with Cindy Crosby leading the way. How much of the lack of diversity in deck composition has to do with the cards and direction of the game, and how much has to do with simple human nature? Humans are creatures of comfort and familiarity. We wear our ruts deeply by treading the same path over and over again, and then choose not to climb out.

For those of you that haven't been keeping track, I've been playing a Lannister kneeling lock deck at every major tournament I've been two for more than two years now, and revolving most of it around Tywin Lannister for as long as the AHOTH version has been available. Does that mean that other lannister deck types aren't viable? By no means. When I started taking this deck to tournaments, trait manipulation was entirely possible. Now, there are Lannister Bolton based decks, or Tyrells, or less related intrigue recycling decks using Highgarden, or hand destruction/ intrigue gambits, heck I even vote that Lannister could make a pretty strong War crest deck. But do I play these at tournaments? No. I've found a rut that works for me. Sure, I tweak and refine and test out new surprises, but the concept is in general the same.

Now take that concept and apply it to our community as a whole. Though we play in widely separated geographic areas with different metas, the wonder of the internet and the amount of discussion we have on the message board leads to a certain merging of group opinions and the creation of group ruts. Our communal knowledge makes the assumption that Greyjoy is exclusively about rush and KoSaR now. But mill has the most potent weapons its ever had, and income denial could still be possible with Burned fields, Reavers of Old Wyk, location destruction, and more directed kill for character based income than Greyjoy has ever had. So why aren't we seeing players exploring these decks more? Our rut, our communal wisdom that has decided to overlook these possibilities. Personally, I really feel that this sort of issue really lies more at the heart of the deck diversity matter than most would like to admit.

I think even post GenCon, they'll still be a need to run both "Fixed" (or "Living") format events as well as Standard (and classic... something I really hope we can create as a stable format) in order to accomodate the newer LCG-only players. I'll agree with some of what you're saying here Chris, we're kinda of jet-lagged between our announced future and it's actual arrival. I think the influx of new (more casual and more multiplayer-oriented) players will come with the arrival of the base set and a concerted push on the part of FFG (and fingers-crossed, GRRM's announcement of a new book)... but I don't think that's going to change any of the current audience's thrist for joust to melee. I know I'm one of the crowd that enjoys both options as both a competitive pursuit (not that I am) and for fun, but I am hopeful that more of the current players will take the time to enjoy melee, and that many of the new players will investigate (~and invest) in training for the lists.

The real question is how big of a crowd is Shara leading... the group that's jonesing for a CCG experience without the overhead of a CCG acquistion.

I have mixed feelings for sure.

So far, the chapter packs certainly have been underwhelming - I agree here. Few uniques (or really, fun cards in general...unless you think Catapult, Cache, and Bear Island are "fun"), the "cycle" cards seem to be unbalanced or boring.

To be fair though, FFG put down some weird timing on this move, and all the cards so far I am assuming would be one expansion. Assuming we got some decent uniques, it wouldn't be a horrible expansion.

As a retailer, I believe the rarity is the only real way they can go. Matter of fact, they need to make more 1 of's. Even in the new LCG's you need "chase" cards, for any real business model. It is the difference between selling 1 pack per person per expansion, to 2-3...obviously people see that would be the way to actually make a profit on all the work that goes into every expansion (cards, playtest, design, art, packaging, Nate's hooker addiction). Obviously driving other people to the store that might not come in is a plus...but you still have to see that the basic profit to any store is less than $5/pack per month. Not much incentive to carry it - selling one board game is 10X that in many stores.

I guess my main concern is the lack of "flair". The main playable cards have been non-unique or a cycle of plots (that are very unbalanced...but that is a different story). The front page of this website talks about "playing the famous or infamous character of aGoT" (or words to that effect). We are getting 2 cost guys that put someone on the top of your deck...I think I could get more newbie's with a playable Tyrion than "Stark chump herald #12".

Again, in their defense however...it is scramble right now, and maybe the core set will change things.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the good time on Saturday. I feel better that in my two losses I'd reached the 15 power threshould... even if I need to remember to draft some more cheap, in house fodder when you don't have ORW. :/

Wow. I feel compelled to post (something I rarely do, though I still read fairly often) after reading what KTom and The Sheik had to say on this topic, and I can't help but agree. For starters, I've been both witness to, and victim of, forgetting passive effects on the new kingdom locations. Maybe this is something I/we will pick up in time, but maybe not. As for the lack of breadth within the game that KTom specifically mentioned, I feel it's only going to grow more pronounced over time as our cardpool shrinks, with subsequent rotations. Yes, the chapter packs are convenient both money-wise as well as time-wise (coming out monthly instead of quarterly), but we're getting *fewer* cards overall. This was, and is, my only serious reservation about the switch, and though I have no current plans on quitting, I do fear that the variety that was in the houses before will only dwindle from here forward leading to less flavor in the game overall, even if the houses are more different from each other than before. It was always interesting to see that rarely one house had a monopoly on a given strategy; though one house might be dominant ini a given type, usually one or two others would have that trait at a secondary or tertiary level, thus allowing more flexibility and personalization to any given deck. Being a dedicated GJ player myself, it was nice that I could have more than one deck-type, and not have to change houses to do so. I remember the first time I broke out a resource denial deck (that had almost ZERO cards in common with my bread-and-butter unopposed deck). and played it against a kid who I got started with Baratheon. His initial reaction was "Wow, I didn't know GJ could do THAT. I thought they could only rush for points"! I'm not sure that we're going to see too many more reactions like that going forward, but I bet we'll see more of the Stark does X and Lanni does Y, as mentioned above. Too bad me I guess, as the in-house variety was one of the things I appreciated most about AGOT in its old format. I for one, wouldn't complain if they switched back. Heck, I'll even settle for larger chapter packs.

But FFG has cut costs with the more limited production runs adn by doing the printing in House (or whatever - I know they said they had a different printing arrangement now).

The Chapter Packs are better for attracting casual players who will play in their living rooms or basements without having to spend hundreds on competitive playsets.

The NY group has added about twleve players on LI and 3-4 more adults in NYC since the reset.

For every person that posts here - i honestly beleive there are five more who do not, yet still love thi s game. Even if they never go to genCon or travel hundreds of miles to play in a competitive regional. And I think that is where htis game will grow - by cultivating them, and catering to their interests.

See - I think Shara's point isn't so much the thirty bucks a month - but the uneeded extra copies of cards. She explicitly said that she got back in only becuase she didn't wnat the clutter of all those extra cards floating aorund. I tend to agree with her. I wish EVERY card as fixed so that the palying field would (eventually) be truly level.

Being a part of a meta with Ktom we've discussed to great extent the issue of the direction the game has taken since ITE. I concur wholeheartedly with the sentiments expressed in his post.

Some time ago I sent a note to FFG expressing some concerns about the direction of the game, here it is:

I and a few other players I've been talking to are concerned with the
direction traits have taken. We are getting just inundated with new
traits in the game. These traits, while adding some flavor provide
almost no tangible benefit or detriment at this point. An R&D
article a while back noted Captain would be a focused trait but other than it being on a bunch of character cards there is nothing they KEYS off of
the trait. This can also be said to one degree or another for Lords,
Ladies, Ashai'i, Mercenary, Ally, Knights, Septons and Conditions
(I'm sure I'm missing some). The reason players like traits is the
interaction with other cards (Knights of the Realm, Queen's Assassin,
etc.) but lately traits have meant VERY little while at the same time
multiplied in volume drastically.

This was almost six months ago. While 5KE did give a smattering of theme cards (Balon, Drogo, Kingsguard Squire, Higher Ground), the overall number of theme decks possible right now are almost zilch. There are Keyword decks out there, but no Knight decks, Kingsguard decks, Creatures (besides Ambush Dragons), Ashai'i or a legitimate Nightswatch deck. And when have most of us even seen one in casual play? The synergy and 'fullness' of these trait-based themes is pretty poor and is pretty much just a bunch of cards with the same trait, but little or no synergy amoungst those cards. Remember things like Muster, Glory of R'hllor, Just Like the Songs, and all those other similar cards.

Remember the days when a 'negative' trait was ACTUALLY negative? Ally, many people on this board see the Ally trait and immediately downgrade the character. Why? There are exactly FOUR Ally hate cards in the Standard environment (Arys, Astapori Guildmaster, Power of Fear and Seek Out the Traitors) and of those I've only seen Arys played in over a year.

So, while the mechanics of the game have splintered into myriad levels that cause even veterans to try (with dificulty sometimes) and decifer how the cards work, the actual Nedly aspect of the game has become significantly watered down since ITE.

I miss the days when trait decks were seen, were fun to play and play against, and when they were even somewhat viable or decidedly so. I realize there are a FEW trait-based decks out there (Clansmen, Bolton and Maester) that see a little competative play, but even Tyrell and Arryn decks rarely see play and those traits had entire sets dedicated to them.

The current version of the game seems to be a sad, watered-down version of it's previous trait-based self. I miss the old design days.
